Speaking of flame retardant materials - flame retardant ABS and flame retardant PC/ABS, why choose the latter?

First, let's discuss the flame-retardant properties. Flame-retardant PC/ABS and flame-retardant ABS can both achieve V0 and 5VA ratings. However, flame-retardant PC/ABS typically uses halogen-free flame retardants, which offer advantages such as being halogen-free, low odor, low smoke, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly, while also complying with the EU's ROHS and REACH regulations. In contrast, flame-retardant ABS uses brominated flame retardants, which provide stable flame-retardant performance but have a stronger odor.  

Next, let’s examine processability. Halogen-free flame-retardant PC/ABS materials are processed with low smoke and odor, do not corrode molds, but require higher processing temperatures, making them relatively more challenging to work with. Flame-retardant ABS has lower processing temperatures, making it easier to mold, but it emits odors during processing and can corrode molds. For specialized requirements, flame-retardant PC/ABS is the better choice.  

In terms of physical properties, flame-retardant PC/ABS exhibits superior tensile strength, flexural strength, and impact resistance. The notched impact strength of flame-retardant ABS is typically around 20 KJ/m², while flame-retardant PC/ABS can achieve 45 KJ/m² or higher.  

Regarding appearance, flame-retardant PC/ABS has better gloss and can be used for high-gloss products without requiring spray painting.  

As for pricing, the domestic price of brominated antimony flame retardants has surged, driving up the cost of flame-retardant ABS to record highs. In comparison, halogen-free flame-retardant PC/ABS material prices are lower. Since the molding process for flame-retardant PC/ABS is similar to that of flame-retardant ABS, with no need for mold changes, it offers good flowability, excellent processability, stronger solvent resistance, outstanding stress crack resistance, and better weather resistance. Therefore, halogen-free flame-retardant PC/ABS materials are often chosen as a replacement for flame-retardant ABS.
