BFS Technology: Principles, Advantages, and Applicable Materials

BFS (Blow Fill Seal) technology is a continuous aseptic process that integrates container forming, material filling, and sealing. It is widely used in the pharmaceutical and medical fields and is a critical technical means to ensure the quality of sterile products.

I. Core Principles of BFS Technology

BFS technology completes the three steps of blow molding, filling, and sealing in a single step. Specifically, the molten material is extruded to form a tubular parison. The sterile mold is then rapidly closed, and sterile air is introduced into the parison, causing it to expand and conform to the mold walls. The parison is then filled with material and finally sealed. The entire process is fully automated and conducted in a Class 100 (ISO 5) aseptic environment. Production rates can reach hundreds to thousands of pieces per minute, effectively meeting large-scale production needs.


II. Key Advantages of BFS Technology

1. Strong Sterility Assurance: Operating in a Class 100 (ISO 5) aseptic environment, the entire process, from container forming to filling and sealing, is free of external contamination, significantly reducing the risk of product contamination. This makes it particularly suitable for products with stringent sterility requirements, such as pharmaceuticals.

2. High Production Efficiency: The fully automated continuous production model reduces manual operations, reducing production costs while ensuring consistent product quality and improving production efficiency.

3. High Material Utilization: Molten material is directly processed into containers, eliminating the need for prefabrication. This results in a material utilization rate exceeding 95%, aligning with current green production and sustainable development concepts.

4. Flexible Design: By simply changing molds, containers of varying sizes, from 0.1ml to 500ml, can be produced, meeting the packaging needs of a wide range of products.


III. Applicable Materials for BFS Technology

1. Polyethylene (PE): LDPE and LLDPE are widely used in BFS technology. Their excellent flexibility and chemical stability make them suitable for packaging products such as eye drops and nasal drops.

 2. Polypropylene (PP): Offers excellent heat resistance and transparency, making it suitable for products requiring high-temperature sterilization, such as some antibiotic injections. However, precise control of extrusion temperature and pressure is required during processing.

3. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC): Once used for packaging of blood products, it is now being replaced by materials such as PE and PP due to environmental and safety concerns.

4. Specialty materials: Materials such as ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) offer enhanced flexibility and low-temperature resistance, making them suitable for products requiring packaging flexibility. Polyolefin elastomers (POE) enhance impact resistance and processing stability, further expanding the application scope of BFS technology.


It is important to note that all materials used in BFS technology must comply with relevant industry standards. For example, pharmaceutical packaging must comply with pharmacopoeias such as USP, EP, and CP, and undergo rigorous compatibility testing to ensure that the materials do not chemically react with the packaged materials and release hazardous substances.
